Choosing Embroidery Thread Colors for Your Hat

The best embroidery thread colors for a hat are the ones that contrast with the hat. Light thread on a dark hat and dark thread on a light hat always read clearly. After that, match your brand colors as closely as you can, keep the number of colors low, and check how each color looks on every hat color in your order.

The thread we use

We stitch with Madeira thread, a brand embroiderers trust for its bright, colorfast colors. Our hat designer shows our Madeira color chart with each thread’s name and number, like White 1801, Black 1800, Gold 1772, Red 1839 and Navy 1967. One design can use up to 15 thread colors.

Rule 1: Contrast first

Your logo has to stand out from the hat to be seen. Some combinations that always work:

  • Black hat: white, silver, gold, red or a bright brand color.
  • Navy hat: white, gold, silver or light blue.
  • White hat: black, navy, red or royal blue.
  • Khaki or tan hat: navy, black, dark brown or forest green.
  • Grey hat: black, navy, white or a strong color like red.

A tone-on-tone look, like black thread on a black hat, can look classy up close but disappears from a distance. Use it on purpose, not by accident.

Rule 2: Match your brand, closely

When you upload a logo, our designer reads its colors and matches each one to the closest Madeira thread. You can change any of them by hand. Thread is a physical material, so shades can look a little different from your screen, and metallic-looking colors like gold are made with a yellow-gold thread. Most brand colors have a very close match.

Rule 3: Fewer colors look sharper

Up to 15 colors is allowed, but most great hat logos use two to five. Every extra color adds detail that has to fit in a small space. If your logo uses shading or a gradient, we’ll turn it into solid colors, because thread can’t blend shades the way ink can.

Ordering more than one hat color

A common problem: a logo that looks great on black hats vanishes on white ones. Our designer lets you add several hat colors to one order and preview each one. When you have more than one color, you can also set different thread for each hat color, like white text on the black hats and black text on the white hats. Mixing hat colors doesn’t affect bulk pricing; see how it works on our pricing table.

Two-tone hats

On a two-tone trucker, like a navy front with white mesh, your thread only has to contrast with the front panels where it’s stitched. But it looks best when it ties in with both colors. White thread on a navy-and-white Richardson 112 is a classic for a reason.

Thread color questions

Can you match my exact Pantone color?

We match your colors to the closest Madeira thread. Thread shades can differ slightly from colors on a screen or in print, so we always pick the nearest match.

Does more thread color cost more?

No. Up to 15 thread colors are included in the logo price.

Will the colors fade?

Madeira thread is colorfast. With gentle washing and out of constant direct sun, it stays bright for years.
